Canal Wood has been buying wood since 17 September 1937, when it was formed to supply pulpwood to International Paper's then-new mill at Georgetown, South Carolina. It describes itself as the largest independent timber merchant in the Southeast, with more than 100 staff timber buyers spread across three dozen-plus field offices in seven states; Riegelwood is one of seven North Carolina offices, alongside Lumberton, New Bern, Laurinburg, Louisburg, Wallace and Rockingham. The company's service list runs past the purchase itself — cruising, harvesting and thinning, management planning, timber marketing, transportation and land sales. Canal Wood also says it is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council; that is a claim on its own website and has not been checked against the FSC certificate database.

The Armour mill on Federal Road is a softwood sawmill, one location of West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd., a publicly traded producer that states it runs more than 50 locations including 32 lumber mills. It sits on the NC Forest Service register as a buyer of standing timber and sawlogs reaching twelve counties, from Columbus and Bladen west to Anson, and it belongs to the Columbus County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. In March 2025 crews contained a fire in the mill's debris storage yard; a company spokesperson said all employees were safe, there was no property damage, and the mill, logs and lumber were not impacted.

A receiving woodyard rather than a mill: the NC Forest Service register lists it buying pulpwood and chip-n-saw across eleven counties, from Columbus and Brunswick through New Hanover, Pender, Bladen and Duplin, with a Riegelwood PO box as its address. Research could find no page anywhere describing the Cape Fear Woodyard as a facility in its own right — International Paper's own location URL for it returns a 404, and the Global Cellulose Fibers locations directory lists mills only, with no North Carolina woodyards at all. There is also an open question about the name on the sign: in August 2025 International Paper agreed to sell its Global Cellulose Fibers business, including the Riegelwood pulp mill this yard would feed, to American Industrial Partners. Whether the woodyard was part of that transaction is not documented.

Fluff, papergrade and specialty pulp come off the machines at Riegelwood, which means the raw material here is pulpwood and chips rather than sawlogs. The scale has changed twice in recent years. In October 2023 International Paper announced it would end production on one of the site's two pulp machines by year end, affecting roughly 200 of about 650 jobs, with the second machine continuing to run. Then in August 2025 IP agreed to sell the whole Global Cellulose Fibers business, Riegelwood included, to American Industrial Partners for $1.5 billion, with closing expected by the end of that year; the buyer cited the business's "large and sustainable wood basket" in announcing the deal. The mill publishes truck driver safety rules in Arabic, English, Russian and Spanish for inbound haulers.

Registration 161 is the third oldest on the entire N.C. register, and this is one of the few firms in the directory carrying two registered foresters rather than one — so the practice does not rest on a single person. The counties are concentrated in the southeastern coastal plain, from Robeson and Columbus out to Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender and Onslow. Twelve services: the full appraisal, cruise and sale administration set, plus logging engineering, prescribed burning, forest taxation and forest real estate. Alexander County is also listed, well away from the rest.

Forty-two counties is wide coverage, but the shape of it is unusual: a solid block through the southeastern coastal plain and sandhills, plus a separate cluster up in the northwestern mountains around Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes. From the Lake Waccamaw office, one registered forester handles appraisal, cruising and sale administration — the whole package a competitive timber sale needs — alongside prescribed burning, reforestation, recreation management and forest real estate. Registration 586 places the firm among the older entries on the state register.

Eleven counties in the southeastern coastal plain — Columbus, Bladen, Robeson and the tier around them, out to Brunswick and New Hanover. That's a tight working radius rather than a statewide operation, which is the point if your tract is down there and you'd rather deal with someone who already knows the local mills. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all on the register, so the full sale can be run from one desk, and prescribed burning, herbicide work and wildlife management round out the list.

The register credits the firm with appraisal, cruising and sale administration, plus prescribed burning, herbicide application, logging engineering and utilization and marketing. Registration 778 places it in the older half of the register. Henderson and McDowell also appear on the county list, well west of everything else.

For a landowner whose tract has a creek bottom or a permitting question tangled up with the harvest, that combination saves hiring a second consultant. Prescribed burning is on the list too. Seventeen counties across the southeastern coastal plain and the sandhills, worked from an office over the line in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Twenty services, the top of the state's A–U list and a wider spread than 98 percent of firms on the register. Surveying and wetland delineation sit next to appraisal, cruising and sale administration, so a boundary question or a stretch of wet ground can be handled by the same firm running the timber sale. Forest taxation and forest real estate are on there too. The office is across the line in Conway, South Carolina; the sixteen NC counties served run through the southeastern coastal plain and the Sandhills.

Seven registered foresters — as many as any firm on the state register — and sixty counties covered, which together make this one of the largest consulting operations working in North Carolina. The reach runs from the foothills in Burke and McDowell across the piedmont and the sandhills to the coast at Brunswick, Onslow and Carteret. The full sale package is here: appraisal, cruise, and running the sale through to contract. Nineteen services in all, including prescribed burning, wetland delineation, environmental impact statements and forest taxation — which matter when a timber sale is one piece of a larger land or estate question.

Surveying and wetland delineation sit on this firm's service list alongside the forestry work, which matters more than it sounds: a boundary question or a wet corner of a tract can be dealt with on the same visit as the cruise. Sixteen counties, most of them in the southeastern coastal plain between Sampson and the lower Cape Fear, with a few reaching north to Wake and Franklin and one as far west as Gaston. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all on the register, so the firm can carry a sale from valuation through to contract.

Nine counties in the Cape Fear corner — Brunswick and New Hanover inland to Bladen, Robeson and Sampson — held by a firm whose registration, number 526, is among the twenty oldest on the state register. Eight services, weighted toward the sale: appraisal, cruise, sale administration, plus reforestation, stand improvement, forest real estate and marketing. It reads as timber work in a defined stretch of the state rather than a broad land-consulting practice. No website is listed.
