This is a wood-treating and fence manufacturing plant rather than a buyer of standing timber. Clement Williams had been hauling wood to the Sanford operation when he bought it in 1988 from Joe Dowdy, who started it in the late 1970s; Williams and his brother Art now run it on 31 acres with about 22 employees and roughly $4 million in annual sales, according to the company. Two pressure-treatment cylinders — 120 feet for CCA, 80 feet for creosote — turn out fence posts, rails, boards and building poles from 6 to 30 feet, including split-face poles and square-hole posts bored on a purpose-built machine. The company says it is one of only a few facilities in North Carolina approved to manufacture creosote-treated fencing, and it sells retail as well as wholesale to agricultural suppliers such as Southern States, shipping from Louisiana to New York. It has taken the E.K. Pitman Safety Award for Manufacturing Company of the Year.
