The mill started in 1983 when its founders bought a bankrupt sawmill in southern Virginia and relocated it to a 14-acre site in Troy, cutting rough green four-quarter boards for North Carolina's furniture industry. After NAFTA closed those furniture factories in the years following 1994, it rebuilt around cross ties, pallet stock, flooring and furniture stock for export. It now employs more than 75 people across Randolph, Moore and Montgomery counties, runs a second mill — Tram Lumber in Seagrove, acquired in 2007 — and took a Manufacturer of the Year award in 2019, though the source does not name the awarding body. President Ray Allen, on site since the company opened, sums up the approach: “When something comes to our yard, we sell everything but the smell. We sell the sawdust, the bark, the chips and the lumber.”
