About Tl Uwharrie Lumber Company
Started in 1983 by three partners who bought a bankrupt mill in southern Virginia and moved its equipment down to a 14-acre site in Troy, Uwharrie Lumber originally cut four-quarter boards for North Carolina's furniture plants. "When we started, a tremendous percentage of furniture that was made in the world and definitely in the U.S. was made within 200 miles of our mill," president Ray Allen told the NC Forestry Association in 2020; NAFTA and the furniture-plant closures that followed pushed the company to diversify away from furniture stock. It is second-generation family run — Allen is the son of founder J.F. "Jeff" Allen — and keeps procurement foresters on staff, so a landowner selling standing timber deals with the mill's own buyer rather than a middleman. The company also operates Tram Lumber, LLC in Seagrove.
