Gilkey's representatives are Registered Foresters in both North and South Carolina, an unusual credential for a business filed under timber buyers rather than consultants, and the company offers landowners a free timberland and harvest assessment through a request form on its contact page. Founded in 1954 by Jess Parton and still family-owned, it manufactures hardwood lumber for the furniture, flooring and specialty wood product trades; the Rutherford County economic development office describes it as having grown into an international supplier. Its buying ground is wider than the county list on this page - the company says it purchases standing timber and offers forestry assistance across western North Carolina, upstate South Carolina and eastern Tennessee, and works within state Best Management Practices for water quality.

Two plants sit behind this listing: the sawmill on Depot Street in Burnsville and a second site in Marion that runs the dry kilns, the planer mill and shipping. The company says it buys its raw material directly from local loggers and landowners, and keeps timber purchasing, forestry and land management and veneer log sales with its own staff, so a landowner selling standing timber deals with the mill itself. Output is green rough lumber in ash, maple, oak, white pine and yellow poplar, and the Primary Forest Products Locator Network lists Bryant & Young as an exporter in the 51-100 employee band, though that record was last updated in 2015. Size class 15 on the state's Forest Products Locator puts this hardwood sawmill several bands above the other small Canton and Waynesville mills on the same list. It also appears on the locator's secondary-processor register, which means work beyond rough sawing happens on site. The NC Forest Service timber buyers guide separately records it as buying timber across six western counties, so a landowner in Haywood, Madison, Buncombe, Macon, Avery or Jackson can approach the mill directly.

The only confirmation found for this Burnsville outfit is the N.C. Forest Service's Yancey County buyer list, which records it purchasing all hardwood and softwood species as standing timber, sawlogs and pulpwood — a wider brief than the "mixed hardwoods" this listing previously showed. Searches on the company name, the phone number and the Blue Rock Road address returned no website, no Facebook page, no BBB file and no Carolina Loggers Association membership. What the register says is all that can be verified about it.

Roughly three-quarters of what moves through this Jonathan Creek yard is exported. Oaks Unlimited has been buying, drying and grading Appalachian hardwood since 1979 from a 20-acre site at about 3,000 feet, 35 miles west of Asheville, turning over around 20 million board feet a year and holding an inventory of more than two million feet in 4/4 through 8/4. Seven kilns take lumber to 6-8 percent moisture, and a Weinig gang rip with 17-point board scanning, a Newman planer and an automated grading station handle the rest. The family is three generations in - the grandfather's stave mills once supplied whiskey barrel staves to Japan - and average employee tenure runs past fourteen years. A custom sawmilling station added recently lets the company saw locally sourced logs for its own kilns.

Trading publicly as Parker Lumber, this Burnsville mill has been family owned and operated since 1984 and offers landowners a free timber analysis of their property before any harvest. The company describes its cutting as "very selective" and aimed at the "sustainability of the trees for future harvests", under the tagline Sustainable Harvest. It appears as a sawmill handling both softwood and hardwood on the Primary Forest Products Locator Network, and the BBB records about 20 employees at the US 19E yard. One side line unusual for a timber buyer: bulk landscaping mulch in several colors, sold by the pick-up load. The LLC itself was registered in North Carolina in 2005, converting the earlier Parker Forest Products, Inc.

Unlike most crews on the Forest Service register, this Burnsville company hauls its own wood: it holds USDOT number 1009797 as a private interstate carrier of logs, poles, beams and lumber, with six power units and six drivers on the MCS-150 filed in July 2025. It is listed as a member of the Carolina Loggers Association, and the Yancey County buyer list records a broader species range than this listing previously carried, adding basswood, cherry and eastern white pine to the oaks, maples, hickory, walnut, ash and southern yellow pine. The BBB file, opened in September 2018, shows five employees and no rating. No website or published reviews were found.

The mulch made here starts as locally harvested logs rather than recycled wood, a choice the company says it makes on purpose: recycled wood can carry nails and other contaminants, and it wants none of that in the product.
