Not sure what your timber is worth?

Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 51 of the 55 foresters covering Sampson County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one

Surveying and wetland delineation sit on this firm's service list alongside the forestry work, which matters more than it sounds: a boundary question or a wet corner of a tract can be dealt with on the same visit as the cruise. Sixteen counties, most of them in the southeastern coastal plain between Sampson and the lower Cape Fear, with a few reaching north to Wake and Franklin and one as far west as Gaston. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all on the register, so the firm can carry a sale from valuation through to contract.

Two counties: Cumberland and Sampson. That is one of the smallest footprints on the register, and it points squarely at a landowner with ground on the sandhills edge or the inner coastal plain who wants someone already close by. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are listed, with forest real estate and forest taxation alongside — relevant if the timber and the land are being weighed together.

Every county in North Carolina is listed against this firm — all 100 — which puts it in the small group on the register that will work anywhere in the state. Registration 392 is the tenth-oldest entry on the North Carolina register, about as long a tenure as this directory contains. Coverage runs seventy counties — the entire mountain west, the whole piedmont, and down through the sandhills to the southeastern coast, stopping short only of the northeastern corner. Thirteen services, including appraisal, cruising and sale administration, plus forest taxation, forest real estate and prescribed burning. For a landowner whose sale is tangled up with an estate or a tax question, that last combination is the point.

The office is over the state line in Rock Hill, South Carolina, but the coverage is anything but local — 48 North Carolina counties, from Union and Mecklenburg up through the Triad and out west as far as Madison, Mitchell and Yancey. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all recorded, the set needed to run a competitive sale end to end. ACF membership marks this as full-time consulting work. Twelve services in total; no website on the register.

Registration 513 sits seventeenth-oldest on the state register, and the firm holds Association of Consulting Foresters membership — ACF admits full-time consultants only, so it signals this is the business rather than a sideline. The office is in Blythewood, South Carolina, but the NC Forest Service register credits sixty-two North Carolina counties: the mountains, effectively the whole piedmont, the sandhills and the southeastern coast. Fourteen services, with appraisal, cruising and sale administration at the center and forest taxation, forest real estate and stewardship planning around them.

Ninety-two of North Carolina's hundred counties, and the eight it leaves out are all in the far southwestern mountains — Cherokee, Graham, Swain and their neighbors. Everywhere else in the state is on the list, which makes this one of the widest footprints on the register. The office, though, is in Columbia, South Carolina: registered to work here, but based over the line. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all listed, alongside prescribed burning, forest taxation, forest real estate and stewardship plans.

Work concentrated in eastern North Carolina — the inner coastal plain around Greenville, Goldsboro and Kinston, out to Carteret and Pamlico on the sound — sixteen counties in all, run from an office over the line in Dorchester, South Carolina. The register credits the firm with appraisal, cruising and sale administration, the set a competitive timber sale needs, along with reforestation, herbicide application and stewardship planning. It belongs to the Society of American Foresters.

All one hundred counties — one of the few listings on the register that covers the entire state. The registration here is number 8, the second-oldest of the 178 registrations on the register, which is about as long a tenure as North Carolina forestry has to offer. Beyond the sale work of appraisal, cruise and contract administration, this firm surveys, so a boundary question and a timber cruise can be settled on the same visit. Christmas tree management, wetland delineation and environmental impact statements are also listed.

Statewide coverage — all 100 North Carolina counties — from an office in Gainesville, Georgia. Fifteen services are recorded, including the three that make a timber sale work: appraisal, cruising, and sale and contract administration. Prescribed burning, herbicide application, urban forestry and stewardship plans fill out the rest. The register carries this entry under the name US Forest Service, with one N.C. Registered Forester and no website given.

Sixty-three North Carolina counties is a wide net — foothills at Wilkes and McDowell, the whole piedmont, and coastal plain out to Brunswick and Craven — and it is worked from an office in Athens, Georgia. One thing to settle before hiring: the register credits this firm with timber appraisal and cruising but not with timber sale and contract administration, so if you want someone to run the sale itself and hold the contract, ask directly. Twelve services otherwise, prescribed burning, herbicide application and wildlife management among them.

Worth reading the service list closely here. The register credits this entry with timber cruising and sale administration but not timber appraisal — so the valuation step most landowners want before going to market isn't among the listed services. What is listed is broad: 48 counties across the northeastern piedmont and most of the coastal plain, plus reforestation, forest real estate, wildlife management and stewardship plans. The office address is Atlanta, Georgia. No website is on file.

The Moncure address is Hunt's Pittsboro Woodyard, one of four the company runs — the others are at Youngsville, Spring Hope and Sanford — and all four take pine and hardwood saw logs plus pine and hardwood pulpwood, accepting, in the company's words, “loads of all sizes”. Hunt Forest Resources was founded in 2004 and now employs more than 40 people across six North Carolina locations, among them Registered Foresters, timber buyers and licensed real estate professionals. It publishes annual figures of 7,000 acres of timberland managed, 56,000 trees planted, 5.5 million board feet of lumber produced, 650,000 tons of logs supplied and 4.5 million pounds of wood waste recycled. Affiliated brands cover lumber, recycling and firewood.

A receiving woodyard rather than a mill: the NC Forest Service register lists it buying pulpwood and chip-n-saw across eleven counties, from Columbus and Brunswick through New Hanover, Pender, Bladen and Duplin, with a Riegelwood PO box as its address. Research could find no page anywhere describing the Cape Fear Woodyard as a facility in its own right — International Paper's own location URL for it returns a 404, and the Global Cellulose Fibers locations directory lists mills only, with no North Carolina woodyards at all. There is also an open question about the name on the sign: in August 2025 International Paper agreed to sell its Global Cellulose Fibers business, including the Riegelwood pulp mill this yard would feed, to American Industrial Partners. Whether the woodyard was part of that transaction is not documented.

The BBB puts this Sanford operation's start date at September 14, 1971 — around 54 years of trading by the bureau's own file — though it is not BBB accredited and carries no rating, the bureau stating it has insufficient information to issue one. The N.C. Forest Service register lists the company buying all hardwood and softwood species as standing timber, sawlogs and pulpwood, broader than the single "mixed hardwoods" entry this listing previously carried. Manta categorises the business under pulpwood and shows about six employees. No website, Facebook page or published reviews were found anywhere.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Sampson County?

57 businesses are listed for Sampson County: 55 consulting foresters and 2 buyers, loggers and mills. 3 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Sampson County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. North Carolina State Extension publishes quarterly average stumpage prices by region, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

What stumpage value means

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Sampson County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant?

Do I need a permit to cut timber in North Carolina?

There is no statewide permit to harvest timber on your own land in North Carolina, but several rules still apply: the Forest Practices Guidelines for water quality, local county and municipal ordinances that can regulate harvesting, and sedimentation rules where a stream is involved. Requirements vary by county, so check with the county before work starts.

Forester listings for Sampson County come from the N.C. Forest Service county register, revised 06-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
