Not sure what your timber is worth?

Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 53 of the 56 foresters covering Wake County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one

Every county in North Carolina is listed against this firm — all 100 — which puts it in the small group on the register that will work anywhere in the state. The service list is narrow by comparison: ten entries, built tight around the sale itself, with appraisal, cruising and sale and contract administration at the middle and forest taxation, utilization and marketing, urban forestry and stewardship plans around them. Both ACF and SAF memberships are recorded. One registered forester covers that ground, which is worth knowing when you're arranging a visit.

Effectively the eastern two-thirds of the state: sixty-eight counties covering every county on the coastal plain and most of the piedmont, which puts this among the widest-reaching listings on the register. Two registered foresters, the older registration numbered 914. The sale trio is present — appraisal, cruise, contract administration. Surveying is on the service list as well, alongside forest real estate and urban forestry, so a boundary or title question does not need a second firm.

Seven registered foresters is the top of the range on the state register, and it comes attached to eighty-four counties — mountains to the Outer Banks, with very little of North Carolina out of reach. Scale like that means a landowner isn't waiting on one person's calendar, and it means the firm doesn't vanish when someone retires. Nineteen services: wetland delineation, environmental impact statements, forest taxation and urban forestry, alongside the appraisal, cruise and sale-administration combination a competitive timber sale actually runs on. ACF and SAF.

Registration 477 is fifteenth-oldest of the 178 on the state register — one of the longest-standing entries in this directory. The reach is broad to match: thirty-nine counties running from Caswell and Stokes on the Virginia line down through the Triangle and the sandhills to Brunswick and the coast. Fifteen services, with appraisal, cruising and sale administration at the center and prescribed burning, logging engineering, forest taxation and forest real estate around them. For an owner who wants competing bids rather than one offer, that middle trio is the part that matters.

Every service the state's A–U schedule covers is on this record — all twenty, more than 98 percent of firms on the register. So the timber-sale core of appraisal, cruise and sale administration sits alongside surveying, wetland delineation, prescribed burning, Christmas tree management and urban forestry. A landowner with a boundary question or a wet corner can get both answered on the same visit as the cruise. Coverage spans forty counties, from the north-central piedmont down through the sandhills and out to the southeastern coast. Memberships in the Society of American Foresters and the International Society of Arboriculture are recorded; no website is.

Forty-six counties is wide coverage for a one-forester firm — the register puts it in the top fifteen percent for reach, running from the Rockingham and Forsyth line east through the Triangle and out to Pitt, Onslow and Pender. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all listed, so the firm can value a stand, measure what's on it, and run the sale through to contract. The rest of the list stays practical: reforestation, stand improvement, herbicide work, wildlife management, and forest taxation for owners thinking past the harvest.

Seventeen services, including logging engineering and wetland delineation and the appraisal-cruise-sale-administration set that lets a single firm value the stand, measure it and carry the sale to contract. Two registered foresters and a short, pointed list: management plans, reforestation, stand improvement, the three timber-sale services — and surveying. That last one is uncommon and useful, because a firm that can cruise your timber and also run your lines settles a boundary question on the same visit. Fourteen counties, closely grouped from Wake and Franklin east to Bertie and Wayne.

What is listed is management planning and mapping, reforestation, stand improvement, prescribed burning, and utilization and marketing. Website listed.

The office is over the state line in Pilot, Virginia, and the twenty-six counties covered are the northern piedmont and the northwestern mountains — Rockingham, Caswell, Person and Granville along the Virginia border, west through Surry and Wilkes to Ashe, Watauga and Avery. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all listed. Both consulting bodies are here, ACF and SAF, and ACF admits full-time consultants only. Reforestation and stand improvement are not on the entry: this is measurement, valuation and sale work rather than planting.

Registration 392 is the tenth-oldest entry on the North Carolina register, about as long a tenure as this directory contains. Coverage runs seventy counties — the entire mountain west, the whole piedmont, and down through the sandhills to the southeastern coast, stopping short only of the northeastern corner. Thirteen services, including appraisal, cruising and sale administration, plus forest taxation, forest real estate and prescribed burning. For a landowner whose sale is tangled up with an estate or a tax question, that last combination is the point.

A deliberately short service list: eight items, fewer than nine out of ten firms on the register. What is on it is the telling part — appraisal, cruising, sale administration, forest real estate and forest taxation. That is a practice built around the transaction rather than around long-term silviculture. Twenty-seven counties, from the northwestern mountains and foothills across to Wake, Johnston and the Sandhills, and a registration old enough to sit in the first third of the register. ACF membership is listed.

Fifty-one counties is a great deal of ground for a single registered forester, and the map is essentially the western half of the state: Watauga, Ashe and Yancey in the mountains, the whole piedmont through Charlotte and the Triad, down to Scotland and Richmond. The same firm can look at a mountain hardwood tract and a piedmont pine stand. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all listed, with logging engineering, herbicide application and wildlife management around them.

Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all recorded, the set needed to run a competitive sale end to end. ACF membership marks this as full-time consulting work. Twelve services in total; no website on the register.

All one hundred counties — one of the few listings on the register that covers the entire state. The registration here is number 8, the second-oldest of the 178 registrations on the register, which is about as long a tenure as North Carolina forestry has to offer. Beyond the sale work of appraisal, cruise and contract administration, this firm surveys, so a boundary question and a timber cruise can be settled on the same visit. Christmas tree management, wetland delineation and environmental impact statements are also listed.

Ninety-two of North Carolina's hundred counties, and the eight it leaves out are all in the far southwestern mountains — Cherokee, Graham, Swain and their neighbors. Everywhere else in the state is on the list, which makes this one of the widest footprints on the register. The office, though, is in Columbia, South Carolina: registered to work here, but based over the line. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all listed, alongside prescribed burning, forest taxation, forest real estate and stewardship plans.

Sixty-three North Carolina counties is a wide net — foothills at Wilkes and McDowell, the whole piedmont, and coastal plain out to Brunswick and Craven — and it is worked from an office in Athens, Georgia. One thing to settle before hiring: the register credits this firm with timber appraisal and cruising but not with timber sale and contract administration, so if you want someone to run the sale itself and hold the contract, ask directly. Twelve services otherwise, prescribed burning, herbicide application and wildlife management among them.

Worth reading the service list closely here. The register credits this entry with timber cruising and sale administration but not timber appraisal — so the valuation step most landowners want before going to market isn't among the listed services. What is listed is broad: 48 counties across the northeastern piedmont and most of the coastal plain, plus reforestation, forest real estate, wildlife management and stewardship plans. The office address is Atlanta, Georgia. No website is on file.

Peachland is the mill that takes what other yards turn away - gum, hickory, elm, hackberry and sycamore - cutting soft hardwoods into industrial timbers, cross ties and switch ties at a reported 16,000 to 18,000 board feet an hour. Edwards acquired the site in 2012; the parent company started in 1969 out of a dirt-floor chicken house in Marshville and now runs six North Carolina locations along with its own timber company and trucking arm. It is second-generation family owned and FSC certified company-wide. The NC Forest Service's Anson County register lists the Peachland mill as buying standing timber, hardwood grade logs, miscellaneous hardwood sawlogs and pine sawlogs, so a landowner sitting on a mixed, low-grade hardwood stand has a genuine outlet here.

Hunt Forest Resources was founded in 2004 and now employs more than 40 people across six North Carolina locations, among them Registered Foresters, timber buyers and licensed real estate professionals. It publishes annual figures of 7,000 acres of timberland managed, 56,000 trees planted, 5.5 million board feet of lumber produced, 650,000 tons of logs supplied and 4.5 million pounds of wood waste recycled. Affiliated brands cover lumber, recycling and firewood.

Incorporated in North Carolina on 30 December 1999 and still listed as current-active in the state registry, this is a timber buyer that leaves almost no public trace: no website, no Facebook page, no reviews, and no trade association or certification records were found. The NC Forest Service register is the only description of what it does — buying standing timber, with a timber cruise offered — and it covers a notably narrow area, just two counties. One thing worth verifying first: the only corporate filing found under this name gives a Siler City address in Chatham County, not the Raleigh mailing address shown here.

Panel and veneer production, not sawn lumber, is what happens at the Corinth Road plant: the Forest Products Locator classifies the facility as “Veneer Plywood Panels” and records it as taking both softwood and hardwood. The Manufactured in North Carolina supplier database lists 256 employees on site and gives the product line as composite panels and mouldings. The plant belongs to ARAUCO, which describes itself as a global forest products manufacturer with more than 50 years of manufacturing experience and distribution to over 3,500 destinations across North America. Its place on this list as a timber buyer comes from the NC Forest Service register.

Now trading as Kindled Provisions — Hunt Forest Resources states flatly that “East Coast Firewood, LLC is now Kindled Provisions” — this Moncure operation produces kiln-dried firewood rather than sawn products. The wood is USDA-certified pest- and mold-spore-free, which is what allows it to be moved across state lines and into parks and campgrounds. Production runs on a Multitek firewood processor and a Pezzolato vertical splitter, with quality checked using digital moisture readers on random samples, and the species offered include cherry, oak, hickory and Southern Appalachian hardwoods. The business shares its address and phone with Hunt's Pittsboro Woodyard and ships across the southeastern United States.

Twelve power units and nine drivers put this among the larger logging outfits working out of Plymouth. The federal SAFER database lists H & L Logging as a private interstate carrier under USDOT #1796742, hauling logs, poles, beams and lumber, with its MCS-150 registration last updated in December 2025. By fleet size that is several times the one- and two-truck operations that make up most of the DOT-registered loggers in this corner of the state. A Carolina Loggers Association directory entry matches the name, but the directory lists no location, so the match is unconfirmed. No website, rating or review was found.

Unlike most stumpage buyers in Halifax County, Kerr runs its own log trucks. Federal motor carrier records under USDOT 337205 list eight power units and three drivers as of the August 2025 MCS-150 filing, and the cargo classification covers "Logs, Poles, Beams, Lumber" alongside "Machinery, Large Objects" — meaning the company hauls its own harvesting equipment onto a tract as well as the wood off it. An industrial directory describes the business as wholesaling rough, dressed and finished lumber and offering logging and forest management services, so it does more than buy stumpage. The NC Forest Service register records it as buying all hardwood and all softwood species, broader than the mixed-hardwood entry the listing was built from. No website, Facebook page or published reviews were found.

Sweet potato storage boxes and environmental silt fence stakes are the unusual end of this business - the stakes treated against mould, the boxes built from dense oak, hickory and ash. Louisburg Hardwood is the parent of Smoke House Lumber Company in the Inez community and a sister company to Louisburg Box and Pallet, and describes itself as having been in the timber, sawmill, firewood and silt fence stake business for many years. New and used Class B pallets round out the product line, with heat-treat certification held for USDA export requirements. BBB records put the start of the business at 1983 with incorporation in 1995, and give it an A+ rating. A second yard operates on East River Road in Louisburg, in Franklin County.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Wake County?

65 businesses are listed for Wake County: 56 consulting foresters and 9 buyers, loggers and mills. 10 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Wake County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. North Carolina State Extension publishes quarterly average stumpage prices by region, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

What stumpage value means

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Wake County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant?

Do I need a permit to cut timber in North Carolina?

There is no statewide permit to harvest timber on your own land in North Carolina, but several rules still apply: the Forest Practices Guidelines for water quality, local county and municipal ordinances that can regulate harvesting, and sedimentation rules where a stream is involved. Requirements vary by county, so check with the county before work starts.

Permits and rules in North Carolina

Forester listings for Wake County come from the N.C. Forest Service county register, revised 06-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
