The 100 Gaston Road plant is the Roanoke Rapids Kraft Paper Mill, producing bag papers, wrapping papers and linerboard — so what it wants off a tract is pulpwood and chips, not sawlogs. Following the WestRock and Smurfit Kappa merger the site now trades as Smurfit Westrock, the name it carries on the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce manufacturers roll. Mill workers are represented by United Steelworkers Local 9-0425; at the time of the merger announcement WestRock said no discussions had taken place regarding any specific facility, and local economic development officials told the press they expected the deal to add stability. One thing to check before calling: the NC Forest Service Halifax County buyer list now routes procurement through WestRock's Hopewell, Virginia office rather than a Roanoke Rapids contact.
